Book Review: The Design Way

Context

In R511, a course on the foundations of instructional technology that I took in the fall of 2020, students were asked to either create a profile of an expert in our field or write a review of a relevant book. I chose The Design Way by Harold Nelson and Erik Stolterman. I had encountered quotes from the book in various other readings and they had always resonated with me, so I was eager to read the whole book.

Summary

The 12-page review provides an overview of key points from the book and draws connections to how they are relevant to instructional design. With sections mirroring the sections of the book—including Foundations, Fundamentals, Metaphysics, and A Drawing Together—the review unpacks my own perspectives on instructional design using Nelson and Stolterman's words as an entry point.

Reflection

As a leader, it is important to continually examine, refine, and deepen your own philosophies and understanding of self. The Design Way made me think differently about the definition of design, the process, and how the designer herself impacts the process and end result. It gave me specific words for abstract ideas and beliefs that had been part of my operating system without being fully articulated—words that I have repeated many times to my direct reports, my peers and managers, and in conversations with colleagues across the industry. I recommend this book to so many people and can't wait to revisit it, as I know I'll  continue to learn more about myself on subsequent readings

Key Takeaways
